All of the Fertility Idol props used in Raiders had brown glass eyes, and at least one mechanical version was built in which the eyes could move left to right. The original intent was for the eyes to follow Indy around the room as he approached the alter, but most of these scenes were cut from the film. The eyes can be seen scanning from side to side for just an instant in the final version of the film. For more info check out the post on the Original Prop Blog .

I kept three things from the premiere of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" - An enduring love of the film, the Collector's Album and my ticket stubs. I saw Raiders at the Cine 1-6 in Colonie, NY. That theater is sadly now gone, but you can read more about it here , here or here . Its hard to believe that the ticket stubs have survived this long. Up until last year they traveled in the relative safety of my Raiders scrapbook. What? Oh yes, I made a scrapbook. I had a "Star Wars" one also, but I have NO idea what became of it. And that's really a mystery and a shame, that scrapbook had my ticket stubs and some great newspaper clippings and ads from the Times Union in Albany. Anyway, the Collector's Album was available for purchase at the concession stand for a whopping $3.00! 'Yeah, I'd like a large coke, a large popcorn a copy of that book please.' It was basically a "making of" magazine filled with storyboards, sketches, photos and stills ...

Last time... The Star Wars Fan Club also gave you an opportunity to purchase an original Raiders One Sheet. All you had to do was mail in a SASE with a check for a whopping $7.00 plus shipping & handling. Then wait patiently for the men and women of the US Post Office to complete their appointed rounds and... five months after the premiere of Raiders you would have your very own "Raiders of the Lost Ark" One Sheet! And here it is... Actually this is a nice big scan from kennmac's Photobucket album . Here's mine, framed and looking for some wall space. I did have it hanging up in my home office (along with Temple of Doom, Last Crusade and Crystal Skull), but when Maddy's Princess Playroom took over Indy was assigned a number and wheeled off into an undisclosed warehouse by our 'top men.' From FILM+TV on 8/31/10 Shortly after the release of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" the TV networks rolled out their own Saturday Matinee Serials. On CBS we had "Bring 'Em Back Alive" starring Bruce Boxleitner and Cindy Morgan (That's right, those two good looking programs from TRON). And yes, I watched it, it was good, and who doesn't like Bruce Boxleitner right? But it wasn't as good or as fun as ABC's "Tales of the Gold Monkey". This show had it all for me: Airplanes, dames and one-eyed dogs. I have not seen this show in years and will probably be horrified by how silly it really is (Have you watched "Airwolf" reruns? Hoo-boy!), but coming on the heals of "Raiders" I was thrilled with the pre-WWII setting, the exotic island local, the shady villains, the femme fatales and that awesome Grumman "Goose", I'm a sucker for vintage planes. Stephen Collins starred as the square-jawed, everyman hero Jake Cutter. ...

I took Ryan to the midnight showing of the latest Indiana Jones movie this week. We attended the local show at Cinemagic 15 in Hooksett. Also in attendance was the local ABC affiliate and their morning news anchor and weatherman. Anyway… I’ll start by saying this; I didn’t hate it. BUT… I didn’t love it either. I liked it. BUT… I want to make some changes, both in story and in editing choices. Sly (and now crusty) archeologist super hero? Check! Fast talking, not quite ready for prime time sidekick? Check! Evil anti-American military villains bent on world domination? Check! Spunky, perky long lost love interest? Check! Fast paced, globe trotting, whip-cracking, fist-slamming action? Check! Character driven, emotionally resonant, meaningful story wrapped in pseudo-scientific mythological mystery? Um… Well… Sorta… no, not really. This movie comes with all of the requisite Indiana Jones parts, but the chief mechanic (Mr. Spielberg) fails to assemble the perfect summer-blockbuster machine...

Doctor Jones is back and filling theater seats for another action-packed, tongue-in-cheek, adventure. While I won’t give anything away, I will say this: Too much George Lucas and not enough (any) Lawrence Kasdan. Yes I thought it was a great summertime, popcorn, action flick. And it should make a ridiculous amount of money at the box office. BUT (ya knew there was one coming) I felt a little cheated when it was over. Jaded fan of “Raiders”? Could be. Still wiping tears away at the end of “Last Crusade”? Maybe. I’ll collect my thoughts, touch base with LAFimcutter and see if I can’t put my finger on it. I’ll have more later.
